Ft. Benning, GA Air Conditioning Repair & Service
History
As one of the oldest continuously operating military bases in the United States, Fort Benning has 100 years of illustrious history behind it. The outpost was founded in 1918 as the site of the United States Army Infantry School. Shortly after the establishment of this military-education institution, the U.S. government created additional learning centers like the United States Army Armor School. Since the 1920s, Fort Benning has also served as an important collaboration site between U.S. army personnel and armed services members from various U.S. allies across the Western Hemisphere. After World War II, Fort Benning expanded into a massive outpost that housed a number of important infantry and paratrooper divisions.
Geography
Fort Benning is located in the northern section of Muscogee County, Georgia. Although it lies just outside of the city limits of Columbus, the fort is the property of the U.S. government. The fort’s population center and command headquarters are located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River near its northeastern corner, and it shares a working relationship with the nearby community of Fort Benning South. Much of the fort is comprised of dense woodlands, open fields and marshy lowlands. However, these areas are heavily trafficked during training exercises throughout the year. Fort Benning’s building stock was largely constructed during the early and middle decades of the 20th century.
Population and Demographics
Fort Benning has an on-base population of about 12,000 people. However, it serves a network of enlisted personnel and reserve members that’s roughly 10 times its permanent size. Thanks to an ongoing realignment program that will result in the closure of several large U.S. military bases, it seems likely that Fort Benning will add to its permanent population over the next decade. In turn, this will swell the population count of the surrounding communities and encourage new businesses to grow. These changes shouldn’t affect Fort Benning’s legendary quality-of-life rankings and tight-knit social institutions.
Things to Do in Fort Benning, Georgia
Fort Benning has an active social scene and a number of community-focused institutions. On the base itself, enlisted personnel who wish to experience the outdoors and escape the indoor gyms at their disposal can use the trails and fields that the Army provides for their use. The 27-hole Follow Me Golf Course is also located on the base itself. Meanwhile, the city to Fort Benning’s north is known for a wide range of cultural and historical attractions. Families who wish to get a taste of the big leagues venture to Columbus Civic Center for the Columbus Cottonmouths’ minor league hockey games. History buffs prefer the Naval Civil War Museum and the outdoor Columbus Historic District.
Climate and Weather
Like the rest of the Columbus metropolitan area, Fort Benning has a subtropical climate that’s renowned for its humid summers, pleasant transitional seasons and cool winters. Thanks to the relative proximity of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, Fort Benning experiences regular rainfall and occasional thunderstorms. Its generally humid climate is made more bearable by frequent cold fronts that roll through the area from the northwest and temporarily bring drier air. During the spring and fall, nighttime lows tend to be quite comfortable. Likewise, the frost and freeze events that occur during the winter tend to be infrequent and transient. Snow, sleet and freezing rain are also rare.
