Phenix City, AL Air Conditioning Repair & Service
History
Founded around 1820, Phenix City was one of Alabama’s first European settlements of any significance. Initially conceived as an outpost in southeastern Alabama’s Muscogee territory, Phenix City took advantage of the region’s rich soils and fertile bottomlands to become a major center for agriculture and trade. The city remained unincorporated until 1883 and had officially consolidated with several surrounding communities by the third decade of the 20th century. Although it briefly developed a seedy reputation during the mid-20th century, Phenix City had overcome its past and become a noted center for manufacturing and trade by the 1970s. These days, it serves as a bedroom community for nearby Columbus and Fort Benning.
Geography
Phenix City lies along the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The center of the city sits directly across the river from downtown Columbus, and the two cities share robust transportation links. These include Alabama Highways 1 and 8 as well as U.S. Highways 280 and 431. Historically, Phenix City was also a hub for rail travel and bulk transportation. The city itself is comprised of an older commercial core, a number of industrial districts, and a ring of residential neighborhoods and suburban apartment complexes. To the north, the forested shores of Lake Oliver offer a beautiful retreat for locals and visitors alike.
Population and Demographics
Phenix City has a population of about 33,000. Thanks to rapid economic growth in the Columbus area and increased enrollment at nearby Fort Benning, this figure has been on a steady uptrend for the past few decades. Although most active-duty military members live on or near Fort Benning, some reserve personnel, military spouses and career officers make their homes in Phenix City. The city is also home to a broad spectrum of industrial workers, middle-class tradespeople, professionals and academics. Many residents work in Columbus, but Phenix City’s excellent school system ensures that locals have great options for their school-age children.
Things to Do in Phenix City, Alabama
Residents and visitors don’t have to go far to find excitement in Phenix City. Film buffs who wish to revisit some of the sites that were depicted in The Phenix City Story can take guided tours or simply drive around town on their own time. Meanwhile, folks who prefer to look even more deeply into the past can visit well-preserved structures and sites like the Morgan-Curtis House and the Floyd-Newsome House. Those who wish to learn more about the Civil War can visit the site of the inaccurately named Battle of Columbus. Although skirmishes persisted after the cessation of hostilities, this altercation served as the last “official” battle of the war. Hikers, bikers and boaters can check out attractive preserved spaces like Standing Boy Creek State Park.
Climate and Weather
Phenix City enjoys a pleasant but variable subtropical climate. Although hard freezes are rare here, it’s not uncommon for temperatures to dip below freezing for brief periods during the winter. Snow and sleet are even rarer, but freezing rain may occur a few times per year. However, the threat of frozen precipitation generally ends by late February, and the region’s growing season can last for eight months or more. By mid-May, a rather humid regime that’s characterized by sticky air masses and frequent thunderstorms settles on Phenix City. Fortunately, blasts of cooler air usually follow these thunderstorms. Phenix City’s transitional seasons are usually pleasant and sunny.
